Advanced Combat Exercises

My role: Concept, Name, Copy

AMD and Microsoft had a limited edition Halo Infinite graphics card. What they didn’t have was enough of them to make the card the whole campaign.

Every Halo player wants to get better. We used that ambition to show what AMD Radeon technology could help them do, giving players something to participate in instead of just something to look at.

The idea · ACE

Teach Halo gamers how to master the Chief.

We created Advanced Combat Exercises: two Halo pros, squads recruited from the community, and a live streaming series built around getting better at the game. The pros coached their teams using AMD Radeon graphics cards, then faced off on their Twitch channels.

Viewers could pick up techniques for their own games. Sweepstakes for Radeon RX 6900 XT GPUs gave them another reason to stick around.

The result: More than 42 million media impressions and hundreds of thousands of sweepstakes participants. The program also gave AMD a format it could use with other games.

McDonald's · Happy Meal

Boombox

My role: Concept, Copy, Creative Direction, Production

Most Happy Meal spots sold that month’s toy. McDonald’s wanted this one to sell the food. The catch? Concerns about childhood obesity and state restrictions meant we couldn’t feature cheeseburgers or fries. We had apple slices to work with.

We made a :15 about a kid dancing his way through breakfast. Then we cut a :60 and showed it to the client. They loved it enough to debut it during ABC’s Primetime Emmy broadcast. A few months later, they ran it during the Super Bowl. How do you like them apples?

Our young star, Quincy, got an invitation to Oprah. The commercial kept getting watched and shared on YouTube. The little spot had taken on a life of its own.

Milliseconds Matter

My role: Concept, Copy

System latency is the delay between clicking your mouse and seeing the game respond. A few milliseconds doesn’t sound like much. Until they get you killed. ASUS ROG had built a Reflex Latency Analyzer to measure that delay.

We made the technical problem a player’s problem: lives lost to lag. That idea carried through the films, social posts, banners and landing page, giving gamers a reason to care about the analyzer and the hardware behind it.

Rice Krispies · Integrated campaign

Childhood Is Calling

My role: Strategy, Concept, Copy, Creative Direction, Production

Earlier Rice Krispies spots opened with a child telling their mother what the cereal was saying. Then animation took over and finished the story. When we tested the work with mothers, their favorite part was the first three seconds. We’d been moving away from the very thing they liked most.

So we stayed with that moment. Childhood Is Calling celebrated the connection between mother and child over breakfast. And because we wanted it to feel real, we cast actors with their own children.

The campaign increased Rice Krispies base sales by 7.5%, outpaced category growth by 10 times and overtook Cheerios in sales growth.

RBC Wealth Management · Global print campaign

RBC Wealth Management

My role: Concept, Copy, Creative Director, Design, Production

This was RBC Wealth Management’s first global campaign. The ads ran in The Wall Street Journal, The Guardian, The Economist and other financial publications around the world.

We gave each headline two ways to be read. The bold words told the bigger story. The full headline delivered a specific benefit. A quick glance or a closer read: either way, there was something to take away.

A Life Story Foundation · Website & Films

A Life Story Foundation

My role: Creative Direction, Copywriting, Account Direction, Production

Kevin Swan was a friend of a friend. In 2012, he was diagnosed with ALS at just 29. He decided to start a foundation, and The Buntin Group took him on as a nonprofit client. To keep costs low, I served as Creative Director, Writer, Account Director and Producer.

We created the foundation’s website and filled it with the life stories of people living with ALS, beginning with Kevin’s. The idea was simple: ALS was part of their stories, but it didn’t define who they were.

Our second film featured Pete Frates. When Pete helped popularize the Ice Bucket Challenge in the summer of 2014, news organizations—including The New York Times, ESPN and The Huffington Post—linked to our film to help tell his story.

The challenge went on to raise more than $220 million worldwide for ALS causes, including more than $100,000 for Kevin’s foundation. Our film helped people meet the man behind the movement.

Special K

My role: Concept, Copy, Creative Direction

A Purdue University study found that replacing two meals a day with Special K, plus eating a sensible dinner, could help people lose up to six pounds in two weeks. Yes, it was a calorie-restricted diet. But that wasn’t much of an advertising idea.

So we came up with all the diets you wouldn’t have to do if you just did this one. We made the alternatives funny and let the Special K plan be simple. One of the commercials ran during the Super Bowl.

Nintendo

My role: Concept, Copywriting, Creative Direction

Pokémon Diamond and Pearl were arriving on Nintendo DS. We brought that arrival into the real world, with Poké Balls appearing around people before we revealed the games. A game launch should feel like something is happening.

Pokémon Diamond and Pearl sold more than one million copies combined in the United States within five days of release—the fastest U.S. launch in the franchise’s history at the time.

Arrowhead BMW

My role: Strategy, Concept, Copy, Creative Direction

If you’re waiting around at a BMW dealership, you might pull out your phone and watch YouTube. We geotargeted our video to people at competing BMW dealers in Phoenix, reaching shoppers while a salesperson was away or the finance office was busy.

Our offer: beat any offer on a BMW by $1,000. They were already shopping for the car. We gave them a reason to buy it from us instead.

Visit Granbury · Destination branding

Granbury, Texas

My role: Concept, Copywriting, Creative Direction

People knew Granbury for its historic town square. There was also a lake, dining, shopping, theatre and plenty to do outdoors. We needed to give people in Dallas–Fort Worth a reason to come over—and a reason to stay past lunch.

“Restore Yourself” connected the town’s restoration with what a visit could do for you. We built the positioning, voice and visual identity around that thought, making room for the town’s history and everything happening there now.

Patrón Tequila

My role: Strategy, Copywriting, Creative Direction

I wrote social campaigns and Twitter posts that kept Patrón relevant to the conversation. Holidays and cultural moments gave us openings. Cocktail ideas gave people something they could actually use.

The point was to have something worth saying, not just a reason to post. The voice stayed playful and confident, with a clear connection to Patrón.

RBC · Golf campaign

RBC Golf

My role: Concept, Copywriting, Creative Direction

RBC Wealth Management and RBC Capital Markets clients spend most of their time leaning forward. Golf gives them a rare chance to lean back. We wanted to meet them in that moment.

We used Team RBC to connect what happens on the course with what RBC can do for its clients. The setting changed. The business message still had a reason to be there.

In 2011, The Heritage golf tournament in Hilton Head lost its sponsor. One of South Carolina’s most important sporting events might be coming to an end. RBC stepped in as title sponsor and earned a lot of goodwill in the state.

During Heritage Week in 2012, we captured that new partnership in Parade and Impact. The films let the tournament and its community tell the story.

Blue Water Roof Garden

My role: Concept, Copywriting, Creative Direction

RBC’s Blue Water Project was a ten-year commitment to protecting fresh water, with a new focus on water in cities. The 2013 Chelsea Flower Show gave RBC a way to show what that meant: a roof garden that captured rainwater and brought wetland planting and biodiversity into an urban setting.

Our posters connected the garden to the bigger commitment. Water took the shape of flowers, bringing Chelsea’s beauty back to the resource that makes it possible. Sustainability and preservation belonged in the garden and in the story RBC was telling.

About Jason

I’m a writer and creative director with experience across national brands, local businesses, and plenty in between. My work has shown up everywhere from Saturday morning cartoons to the Super Bowl, global publications to local pamphlets, and brand websites to Twitch, Twitter, Reddit and TikTok.

I like a brief that takes some figuring out. I like the answer to be easier to understand than the brief.
